Independent Project: Inspiration

Francisco Infante-Arana is a Russian photographer who uses mirrors in landscape photography to add a unique twist to typical landscapes of nature.  Francisco also works with his wife, Nonna Gorunova, who is also a photographer to create the complex images. They worked together during the Soviet Era which was known for its lack of alternative and modern artwork. They are considered even more remarkable as artist because they were creating such modern photographs during a period of great upheaval and artistic restraint. Their pictures were not only free of any computer manipulation, but they belong and are well entrenched in the film era, being from the 1970's and 1980's. Francisco was and still is one of Russia's leading avante-garde artists.

Then and Now

When I was younger, I was a chummy little thing. Small and inexperienced, I was ready to take on the world with no worry. Too bad I was the runt of the litter and the last to learn how to walk. My siblings were walking around the house while I was crawling, waiting for my moment of glory. I think that being the smallest and weakest of my siblings ultimately made me a more determined person today. You can't see in this photo but I am eating lunch with my siblings and playing a board game. I was really competitive as a child; tackling my brothers and racing my sister are just a few examples of my competitive nature. I think I am less competitive today but every now and then I have a competitive streak.  All in all I am pretty much the exact same from when I was 2!

Kate Moss


Subject: The woman in the portrait is Kate Moss, a famous supermodel. The image is black and white.

This image is very different from the ones that Kate Moss normally models for (fashion shots, Vogue covers) which makes this extra interesting. You are able to see the side of her that is almost intimate and private, like no one is supposed to see her in this state of vulnerability. The lack of makeup and the rawness of the photo really add to the idea of a vulnerability.

The photograph makes me feel slightly uncomfortable because I feel like I am seeing this side of Kate Moss that no one else sees. The use of a black and white and a high definition camera really allows the viewer to see every single wrinkle or divot in her skin. The photographer also uses extreme close up to capture the details of her skin and hair.

I want to know more about her life and how she became who she is.

I have always wanted to be able to create photos like Lee Jeffries and Chuck Close because they tell stories about the subjects. I want to try and see if Vaseline on the skin causes exaggerated wrinkles and lines.

Officially Inspired

I don't think I have ever been more excited about a photographer before. I was dilly dallying on tumblr and came across a photographers blog. His name is Kyle Thompson and I personally think everyone should know who he is. I mean, man, can this guy take some surreal photos. Well, it ends up he is a surreal conceptual photographer. I had never heard of this type of photography and it has easily become my favorite style in the past 5 seconds. The way that he creates a surreal world and depicts different concepts is really mind blowing, take a look at a few pieces of his work...
